I was super excited about being offered this amazing opportunity to work with Little Inventors as my placement, having younger siblings at home I instantly knew that this project was for me. I couldn't wait to get stuck into the workshops at Oxgangs Primary but first I wanted to focus on making our project a little more recognisable.
Logo Design:
After only a few days in our funky new office we all decided that re-designing the logo to suit our project would really help us stand out in the Little Inventors community. My research started with looking at the initial Little Inventors logo along with the web design and social media of the company. I instantly noticed that they had done collaborations with other schools and businesses before so I was able to look at the logo designs produced by others to help guide and inspire me.
Wanting to create a design that was unique and funky I came up with the idea of using the original Little Inventors logo and collaborating it to have a Scottish feel. My initial design was to take inspiration from a highland cow and vikings hat, this was because the original logo has a cartoon illustration of a boy with a hard hat on. We all felt very passionate that we wanted to create a design that was special to us but we had to be careful not to stretch too far from the original logo, ensuing that Little Inventors as a company was still recognised through us.
I’d had experience of logo designing from owning my own t-shirt business so I knew we needed approval in everything that we did. Chelsea, a member of the Little Inventors team, dropped in to give us our first workshop on how to actually run Little Inventors workshops. I found this to be very useful and really helped me get into a maker attitude, Chelsea looked over our designs before sending them to the design team and manager to get full approval of Wee Inventors and our highland cow cartoon. The Idea of ‘Wee Inventors’ came from us being the first group of workshops formed in Scotland, we really wanted to emphasize that we were proud to be Scottish and to have the opportunity we thought Wee was a perfect alteration.
The Team:
Once we had been in the office for a few days we were starting to get to grips with things and how we should be working to achieve our goals. We decided that everyday for the first hour we would sit down and chat on the comfy sofa, allowing us to discuss problems and situations that we had come across in a chill environment. As a team we decided that it was best to split up the project up into sections, I really liked this idea as I knew how important management and organisation was, that we needed to ensure nothing was forgotten about or pushed aside.
I was given the management role of Oxgangs Primary, which I was thrilled about as I love working with kids. Being responsible for all emails, permission slips, class plans and any questions by staff or children I took on the role with the help of my team. Kathleen was responsible for our 1st year students, Kat our social media platform and Jordan the Exhibit. Although we all had various roles we all helped each other out as there is no ‘I’ in ‘team’.
